KONSERT MALAM GALA SIMPLY SITI

Tips on Choosing Right Brush

best makeup brushes

Buying The Right Makeup Brush
by Elke Von Freudenberg

As a professinal makeup artist, I rely on my makeup brushes to give me the perfect application that I need when doing magazine work. And while makeup brushes can be quite costly, quality brushes last a lifetime. Here's how to make sure it passes your buying criteria first.

WHAT MAKES A HIGH QUALITY BRUSH?
The best brushes on the market are those that are made up of a variety of natural hairs. Want the softest brushes around? Then use Squirrel hair. Though they are the most expensive, they are the softest on the skin and blend the best. Want durability in a brush? Sable hair will last a lifetime and are good for heavier products such as lipstick, creams and frosted/glitter eyeshadows.

Need a brush to apply creams and concealers. Try Taklon bristles, a cream colored hair that is strong enough to move the product around without absorbing it. Taklon also lays the product directly on the surface of the skin, giving the most coverage. Natural hairs require care to last, but also last the longest.

Try to stay away for synthetic or man made hair. You can tell synthetic hair with bristles that are super glossy and feel very stiff and coarse. Synthetic hairs also tend to get stiffer with repeated use.

THE 3 CUTS OF BRUSHES
Straight Cuts - are like a straight hair cut, or a bob. All the hairs line up evenly in a straight line. These are the best for when you need to make a straight line, i.e. eye lining, eyebrows, eyeshadow, etc. Look for your Eyebrow and Angle brushes here.

Chisel Cuts - are slightly layered into the ends of the brush. This brush has a rounded look and effect. These are excellent for blending and creating a softer touch when applying a dark color. Stock up in these for blush, contouring, powder and all eyeshadow brushes.

Tapered Cuts - where the ends of the brush are rounded out in a tapered fashion, yet the brush itself is flat. A tapered lip brush is a perfect example of this. Since the lip line is not exactly straight, this brush draws a great curved line. Check out this cut also in concealer brushes, eyeshadow brush or Taklon brushes.

Here are some general descriptive words used to describe brush characteristics:
  • brush head shape;  square, dome, tapered, angled, slant etc
  • brush head size; fine (extra small), small, medium, large, extra large
  • bristles; natural hair -sable, squirrel, goat vs.  synthetic- nylon, taklon
  • bristles; texture-fine, soft, coarse bristles; firm, stiff, dense etc.
  • handle length; long, short, 'travel size'

How to Clean your Brushes?

Cleaning makeup brushes is a necessity. Each time you use a makeup brush, it picks up both makeup and any natural oils on your face, as well as any other products that are on your face. Then there is the dust in the air that just lands on a resting brush. Bacteria can make a home in dirty makeup brushes, so this buildup must be removed on a regular basis. Here's how to do it.

STEP 1: Soak the brushes in a container large enough for them to lay down, in a solution of OIL FREE make up remover (20%), purpose (or similar soap free facial cleanser) (20%) and water (60%) for 2 minutes. Swish the brushes around every 30 seconds or so. You will see the make up being lifted from the brushes. Do not soak more than 5 minutes!

STEP 2: Put a small amount of cleanser in your hand, with a little water, and swirl the brush around gently. repeat this step until no large amounts of make up are coming out into the water. Rinse with warm water

STEP 3: After you follow the above step for each brush, squeeze excess water and lie on layered paper towel.

STEP 4: Re-fluff the brushes as much as possible while wet, and stand them up to dry (not up and down, just with the brush head slightly lifted.

STEP 5: When completely dry, re-fluff and your brushes are ready to use. this is the gentlest way to clean them and should give your brushes a long life.

OR ELSE, GRAB YOUR BRUSH CLEANER! You don't want to spend a lot of money buying high quality makeup brushes if you are not going to be able to look after them by keeping them clean and conditioned.  Foundation, eyeshadow and lip brushes should be cleansed after each use to stop bacteria spreading and therefore keep your skin clear; whilst other types of brushes such as powder and blusher can be cleansed once a week. Most brands that sell brushes also have a brush cleanser, including Clinique.

Professional MAKEUP BRUSHES

A professional beautician finds brushes useful for several reasons:

  • Safety - when applying make-up on your own face, it's easy to keep your hands flat so only the pads of your fingers touch the skin. When applying to someone else's face, your hands are at a steeper angle so there's more risk of scratching with a nail.
  • Pressure - on your own face, you can judge the pressure of your fingertips because you can feel it. Obviously, you don't get that feedback on another person's face, so there's a risk you may press too hard and cause discomfort or even stretch the skin, especially around the eyes. Brushes ensure you exert only light pressure.
  • Precision - a professional can spend hours working on a face, adding multiple different products with pinpoint precision. Fine brushes are more precise than fingers.
  • Hygiene - although brushes are actually less hygienic than clean fingers, many clients have the opposite perception. The make-up artist may also prefer not to touch the skin of someone with acne or other skin complaints.
  • Professionalism - image is important, especially for a profession which is often under-valued. Having an armoury of brushes and tools - even ones you don't strictly need - emphasises that this is not just "the make-up girl" but an artist who is worthy of respect.
So, professionals use brushes for reasons that don't apply to most of us.  That doesn't mean you can throw away all your brushes - some of them are very useful!  It does mean you can be selective in which brushes you buy.  And it means you shouldn't feel pressured into buying that brush the girl at the cosmetic counter is pushing!

A few good brushes is better than a pile of cheap ones
The great thing about understanding brushes is that you can invest in a few top quality brushes, rather than buying a whole load of cheap ones.
Good brushes are a pleasure to use, they last longer, and they'll produce a much better finish. You won't get stray bristles escaping on to your face, and you won't get a streaky result.

The Difference in your Makeup Brushes

Makeup Brushes

makeup brushes
Makeup brushes can make a world of difference in the final results of your makeup application. Brushes are not just an optional extra. They help you apply your makeup with greater accuracy and precision, and they create a significant difference to the finished look. No makeup artist worth her lip gloss would be found without them. If you take your beauty regime seriously, a set a good quality brushes could be the best investment you'll make.
Rather than smearing eyeshadow on your lids with a finger, or applying lipstick straight from the tube, fine tune your application technique with tools fit for professional results. Here's how to turn a drugstore cosmetic into a runway-worthy product with the help of some backstage beauty tips on makeup brushes.
